Petrarch in English
Edited by Thomas P. Roche Jr.

'Brilliant' The Times Literary Supplement

This collection contains English language versions of Petrarch's poems from across six centuries, in a wide variety of translations and reinterpretations, and also includes great English poems influenced by Petrarch. From Chaucer's early adaptation of a Petrarchan sonnet in Troilus and Criseyde to Ezra Pound's parody Silet, all provide a unique insight into the significance of the founder of the European lyric tradition.

This anthology reveals the profound influence of Petrarch on later English poetry, with an introduction considering the poet's life and the progress of his works in the English language. The edition also includes notes on individual translators and separate introductions to major poems.
African Myths of Origin

Price: £12.99
Pub date: 01/12/05
African Myths of Origin
Retold and introduced by Stephen Belcher

Gathering a wide range of traditional African myths, this landmark new collection offers tales of heroes battling mighty serpents and monstrous birds, brutal family conflicts and vengeance, and desperate migrations across vast and alien lands. From accounts of the inventive wiles of animal-creators and a community fleeing a giant crocodile, to the heroic story of the cripple Sunjata who rose to found an empire, all the narratives here concern origins. They offer a kaleidoscopic picture representative of the rich cultures and societies of the African continent; the ways of life, the peoples - from small hunting bands to great empires - and the states that have taken shape over many generations and environments.

Arranged to allow easy identification of regional patterns and connections, this volume reworks traditional stories in a language intended for the general reader. The introduction explores the vital significance of these time-honoured myths of origin, their history and development over the years. This edition also includes detailed maps that place the tales in geographic context.
Mademoiselle de Maupin

Price: £9.99
Pub date: 01/12/05
Mademoiselle de Maupin
Theophile Gaultier
Translated by Helen Constantine with an introduction by
Patricia Duncker

Chevalier d'Albert fantasizes about his ideal lover, yet every woman he meets falls short of his exacting standards of female perfection. Embarking on an affair with the lovely Rosette to ease his boredom, he is thrown into tumultuous confusion when she receives a dashing young visitor. Exquisitely handsome, Théodore inspires passions d'Albert never believed he could feel for a man - and Rosette also seems to be in thrall to the charms of her guest. Does this bafflingly alluring person have a secret to hide? Subversive and seductive, Mademoiselle de Maupin (1835) draws readers into the bedrooms and boudoirs of a French château in a compelling exploration of desire and sexual intrigue.

Helen Constantine's vivid and evocative translation is accompanied by an introduction by Patricia Duncker, which discusses themes of identity and disguise, and Gautier's provocative reworking of Shakespeare's As You Like It. This edition also includes further reading, notes and a glossary.
The Diary of a Madman, The Government Inspector and Selected Stories

Price: £8.99
Pub date: 01/12/05
The Diary of a Madman, The Government Inspector and Selected Stories
Nikolay Gogol
Translated with notes by Ronald Wilks and an introduction by Robert A. Maguire

Author, dramatist and satirist, Nikolay Gogol (1809-1852) deeply influenced later Russian literature with his powerful depictions of a society dominated by petty bureaucracy and base corruption. This volume includes both his most admired short fiction and his most famous drama. A biting and frequently hilarious political satire, The Government Inspector has been popular since its first performance and was regarded by Nabokov as the greatest Russian play ever written. The stories gathered here range from comic to tragic and describe the isolated lives of low-ranking clerks, lunatics and swindlers. They include Diary of a Madman, an amusing but disturbing exploration of insanity; Nevsky Prospekt, a depiction of an artist besotted with a prostitute; and The Overcoat, a moving consideration of poverty that powerfully inspired Dostoyevsky and later Russian writers.

Edited and translated by Ronald Wilks, this new collection of Gogol's shorter writings skilfully captures the savage wit of the original works. Robert Maguire's introduction considers recurrent themes and Gogol's influence on Realism. This edition also includes detailed notes, a publishing history for each story and a chronology.
